Before installing a new fence or replacing an existing fence there are a few simple steps that need to be followed in order to receive approval for installation.
IMPORTANT: Please read the information below which will allow you to begin the process. If you have questions, please send them to: contactus@williamsburgvillage.net and include a telephone number where we can reach you.
You will need to submit an Architectural Request Form – Fences which is found at the bottom of this page.
Styles
There are two approved styles of fencing. Examples are shown below.
- Note: The only approved color is White.
- Standard Height is either 6’ or 4’.
- Fence material must be vinyl (PVC type). No Wood Fences permitted.

Vendors
You may use a vendor of your choice as long as they offer the approved style you have chosen. Vendors must be licensed to operate in the City of Bloomington. Many Williamsburg residents have used A to Z Fencing which does carry both styles. https://atozqualityfencing.com/farmington-fence-company/
Survey Requirements
If you’re planning to install a fence along a lot line between your property and a neighbor’s, you will need to have a site survey of your property completed and submit it with your Architectural Request Form – Fences. This is required to prevent your fence from accidentally being installed on your neighbor’s lot and possibly having to pay to tear it out and reinstall it in the future.
It is important to have the surveyor clearly mark the property lines for the fence installers to follow. You can use any licensed surveyor but may want to consider Sunde Land Surveying as they are very familiar with many of the properties in Williamsburg Village. Sunde’s contact information can be found on the Resources page of this website. https://williamsburgvillage.net/resources/
Ownership and Maintenance
You own a fence that is located on your property and are responsible for its maintenance, upkeep, and appearance. You are responsible for both sides of a fence constructed along a property line if it is on your property. Your neighbor is not responsible for the side of the fence facing their property.
Restrictions
If you are planning to install your fence along a property line on the side(s) of your house it cannot extend beyond the front corner(s) of the house.
Call Before You Dig
You will be required to contact Gopher State One Call prior to having a new fence installed or an old fence removed. It’s the Law! This is a free service that will mark any existing underground utilities to avoid damaging them.

Lawn Irrigation Sprinkler Heads
If you have an underground system, you should contact your irrigation service company and have them flag all sprinkler heads anywhere near the area where a fence will be installed or removed.
If your adjacent neighbors have sprinkler systems give them the courtesy of letting them know about your installation. You’ll be responsible for damage to their systems if your installer causes the damage.
City of Bloomington Fence Restrictions
Please be aware the City of Bloomington has certain restrictions and requirements for fences. Examples include but are not limited to houses on street corners which have limited options. Fences located on corner lots cannot obstruct a vehicle’s view of oncoming traffic. There are also setback requirements for fences installed on properties that border City sidewalks. You can visit the City of Bloomington website to see their requirements. Williamsburg Village HOA is not responsible for checking compliance with the City of Bloomington’s fence requirements. This is the responsibility of individual homeowners.
