A well-maintained lawn increases the Curb Appeal and therefore the Value of your home.
Grassy areas and lawns make up the largest percentage of Williamsburg. As important as it is to maintain your home for comfort, appearance, and value, it’s also important to realize your lawn and landscaping are part of your home and need to be maintained too. The information listed below contains Williamsburg Village Policies and Guidelines regarding lawncare. It also includes various tips and resources. There are three simple steps to having a weed-free green lawn:
- Mowing and Trimming
Homeowners are expected to mow their lawns once a week. Failure to do so decreases the curb appeal and the value of your and your neighbors homes. Take care not to cut your grass too short. Doing so during hot summer months can damage your lawn. You are also expected to trim the grass around or along trees, shrubs, flower beds and fences. If you don’t want to or can’t mow, there are many services available to provide lawn care for you. See Flagship Landscapes under Useful Links below.
- Water
Most professionals will tell you your lawn needs an inch of water per week. It’s easy to keep track of how much rain we’ve gotten. There are a lot of good, free apps like ‘Rain Drop’ available. If we don’t get an inch from rainfall it’s easy to make up the difference by watering with a hose and sprinkler or an underground irrigation system.
- Fertilize
Fertilizing three times per year will help improve and maintain the health of your lawn. In the Spring you should apply fertilizer with pre-emergent to prevent weeds from blooming. During the summer you should apply a second round of fertilizer and a third in the fall. Remember if your lawn has lots of weeds this process will not fix it overnight. You may not see the results you want until the second year of fertilizing. Be Patient. There are many services available to fertilize for you.

- Yard Waste
Maintaining your lawn and landscaping inevitably generates yard waste. The city offers a convenient way to dispose of your organic Yard Waste – grass clippings, leaves, branches and more. Yard waste collection is a subscription service for residents with City garbage and recycling collection. Weather permitting, full-season yard waste collection runs Monday of the second week in April through Friday of the last week of November. If there is significant snowfall before the end of November, yard waste collection will end at that time. Yard Waste / City of Bloomington
- Composting
Composting is a great way of dealing with yard waste. Composting saves money and creates great organic soils you can use in your yard. To learn more: Bloomington Backyard Composting
